What You'll Need at Security

  • Government-issued photo ID: Canadian driver's license, passport, or Enhanced ID
  • Boarding pass: Digital on phone or printed copy
  • For international flights: Valid passport required (must be valid for 6+ months)

The Screening Process: Step-by-Step

Liquids, Gels & Aerosols: The 100ml Rule

All liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on bags must follow the 100ml (3.4oz) rule:

  • Each container must be 100ml or less
  • All containers must fit in a single clear, resealable 1-litre plastic bag
  • One bag per passenger
  • Bag must be presented separately at screening

Common Liquids/Gels:

• Toothpaste
• Shampoo/Conditioner
• Makeup/Mascara
• Lip gloss
• Hand sanitizer
• Perfume/Cologne
• Contact lens solution
• Sunscreen

Pro Tip: Liquid Exceptions

Prescription medications, baby formula/milk, and breast milk are exempt from the 100ml rule. Notify the screening officer and be prepared to present these items separately.

Prohibited Items in Carry-On Bags

The following items are NOT allowed in your carry-on baggage:

Sharp Objects

  • • Razor blades (not in cartridge)

Electronics & Devices

Must be removed from carry-on and placed in separate bins:

  • Laptops - Remove from case/bag
  • Tablets - iPad, Kindle, etc. (remove from bag)
  • Large cameras - SLR/DSLR cameras
  • Gaming devices - Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Portable

Can Stay in Bag

Smartphones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, portable chargers, and cables can remain in your carry-on bag.

Food & Snacks Through Security

Allowed

  • • Solid foods (sandwiches, snacks)
  • • Baked goods (cookies, muffins)
  • • Fresh or dried fruit
  • • Nuts and trail mix
  • • Candy and chocolate
  • • Granola bars

Must Follow Liquid Rule

  • • Yogurt (100ml or less)
  • • Hummus (100ml or less)
  • • Honey/jam (100ml or less)
  • • Peanut butter (100ml or less)
  • • Salsa/dips (100ml or less)

International Flights

Some countries prohibit bringing certain foods. Check destination country restrictions before packing food items.

Traveling with Children

Special considerations for families at CATSA security:

  • Baby Formula & Breast Milk

    Exempt from 100ml rule. Notify officer and present separately for inspection. Reasonable quantities allowed.

  • Strollers

    Must be collapsed and sent through X-ray. Children can remain with parent during screening.

  • Car Seats

    Can be carried through security and used on aircraft if child has a reserved seat.

  • Baby Food & Snacks

    Reasonable quantities allowed. Pouches, jars, and containers will be screened.

Medical Devices & Medications

  • Prescription Medications

    Allowed in reasonable quantities. Keep in original containers with prescription labels. Liquid medications exempt from 100ml rule.

  • Needles & Syringes

    Allowed with supporting medical documentation. Insulin and other injectable medications permitted.

  • Mobility Aids

    Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and crutches can go through security. Screening officers will assist.

  • Pacemakers & Medical Implants

    Inform screening officer before going through metal detector. Alternative screening available.

Carry Documentation

Bring a doctor's note or medical certificate for any medical devices, implants, or large quantities of medication. This speeds up screening.

NEXUS is a joint Canada-US program that provides expedited processing at airports and land borders:
